Skill Drills

Skill Drills are entirely about developing a single, individual skill, and while all drills will work on several things at once (sword handling, strength, cutting technique, guard position... etc) the purpose of a skill drill is to put aside thinking about any other aspect of the martial art and focus on just one. Thus, a great deal of the effectiveness of these drills falls on what lies between your ears. If you go about these drills without any mindful preparation or awareness, they will have a very limited usefulness and you will feel like you have completed them/mastered them very quickly. We must be aware of what skill the drill is trying to instill exactly, and focus our attention and efforts into that singular area. Each drill will be listed in written form alongside a video of the drill in action, with each drill will also be the specific skill that drill is intended to exercise.

Repeat this motion over and over until you feel very comfortable with it, allowing the end to flow directly back into the beginning by doing a Mulinello into the first Mandritto Fendente in the drill

Part 2:

  1. Do part I up to the last step
  2. Allow the tip of the blade to drop from Fenestra Destra
  3. Do a complete turn and strike a false edge Mandritto Sottano
  4. As the blade arrives in Posta Longa Molinello into a true edge Mandritto Sottano
  5. Pass forward and continue the motion into a false edge Roverso Sottano
  6. Molinello into a true edge Roverso Sottano finishing in Fenestra Destra

This can now be repeated infinitely in it's own right, or chained back into part I to create an infinite loop between the two parts.
